Horseback Riding Lessons
Kim has been a Massachusetts Licensed Horseback Riding Instructor for over ten years and firmly believes that the horse-human connection and bond has been critical throughout her life, “I couldn’t imagine a life without my horses! They bring me such relaxation and joy. I also love that I am always learning; my horses challenge me to be a better rider and owner every time I’m at the barn.”
Initially, AaTs MA was not going to offer an equine element immediately after our foundation; however, we must credit one of our clients with the inspiration! Although we are not yet able to offer therapeutic riding lessons to disabled riders at this time, Kim believes that horseback riding does, in fact, provide benefits to all. Horseback riding allows a rider to build confidence and self-esteem by fostering a unique partnership and connection with a powerful animal. Balance and mental stimulation are critical to becoming a talented rider while responsibility and stewardship is crucial to having an athletic and trusting equine teammate.

Tot Trot
This is not a pony ride - young riders learn to safely and confidently ride all by themselves! First, students will learn how to groom and the order or brushes. Next, they watch as the instructor tacks up and explains the parts of the saddle and bridle. For the first few lessons, Kim walks next to the horse and rider while explaining riding cues and reinforcing proper positioning to the new equestrian. Utilizing the benefits of the lunge line, Kim asks the student the put their hands "out like an airplane" and "up to the sky" to test their balance at the walk and later at the trot. Obstacle courses and riding games such as "follow the leader" or "red light, green light" are great ways to challenge the rider without them even realizing it. Most students will ride by themselves around the arena at the walk at the end of their first lesson. Little students should pay attention because Kim frequently quizzes them on their equestrian knowledge- winners receive treats for their horse!

Private Lessons
New riders will start out the lesson by learning how to groom and the order of brushes. The next procedure is tacking up, with help from the instructor if necessary. Riders will begin at the walk as the instructor explains not only cues and signals, but how and why we do them and why they are effective. The first several lessons incorporate both riding with the lunge line and riding independently in order to build basic skills and increase confidence. Trail Ride Weeks and Bareback Weeks throughout the year help to form a well-rounded and capable rider. Kim also specializes in working with timid riders by using games on horseback to make riding fun and exciting. More advanced riders will fine tune their seat and communication skills through flatwork and jumping exercises.
